Sabah Shipyard embarked on a major expansion programme to upgrade the fabrication capacity.
The objective was:

To extent the present wharf length from 200m to one kilometer to cater to increase demand for berthing of ships.

To provide skidways and foundation capable of providing at least seven parallel fabrication lines for construction of offshore platforms.

To stabilize the ground to cater for movement of heavy lifting vehicles.
LTE ENGINEERS was appointed as the main civil and structural engineering consultant for the development. Combination for the box and single sheetpiles were designed for the anchored earth retaining structure for the wharf to be driven from a barge. Spun concrete piles to the capacity up to 400MT safe working load were used for the skidways and tower crane beams whilst steel tubular and H-piles were utilized for the wharf platform. Rubber fendering system was designed for the entire wharf to take up the energy of berthing vessels up to 20,000 DWT. Cathodic protection for the sheetpiles for 20 year life together with testing locations were provided. Bollards located at 20m intevals were designed to take 50 MT breaking load.
